Posts for this week 8-31 to 9-4

I decided to combine all of my drafts for this week into 1 post since they’re all relatively short.

Monday 8-31

I am a city boy, I was born and raised to be one. Yet here I am out in the country working at a horse farm. I’m contemplating how it turned out this way as I transport bales of hay on a wheel barrow. Not once in my entire life had I even considered the possibility of working at a farm, I always figured I would be a pencil pusher at some at some office in a big city or even a scientist/teacher like my mom and sister. I know this is just another stepping stone in my life, but it still surprises me when I look at how I got here.

As I was clearing off some loose hay on the next bale, I noticed something dark colored move away. It turned out to be a snake, a small one at that. I was about to pick it up when my instincts stopped me and I realized that I can’t tell whether it was poisonous or not. Sure I know the old saying “Red touch black, friend of Jack. Red touch yellow, kills a fellow” but this snake was brown with white diamond shape patterns. I decided to let my boss, Margie, know that I just found a snake. Just as RPG is a bee phobe, Margie is a snake phobe. After telling about the snake, she tells me to kill and was out of the shed before I could turn around and ask her “with what?”.

I’m not the kind of person to go killing off animals without hesitation so I decided to go to the tool shed and find something that could help me fling it into the woods. Best thing I could find was a shovel. Back at the hay shed, the snake seems to have slithered off among the loose hay and I had to carefully search for it. When I found it, it was coiled up and it was shaking it’s tail. I wasn’t sure if this young snake was a rattler or not but if I see any snake take such a stance I know shit just got serious and quick action would be needed. I decided then and there that it was best to kill it off rather than fling it to the woods.

One of my reasons was that the neighbor’s kids, the one who hired me to pet sit and pull weeds for them this past summer and both parents happen to work at the same school my mom teaches at, play in the forest where I planned to send the snake. I don’t think I’d be able to live with myself knowing that I sent something dangerous into their area. (Off topic: hearing them talk in their English accent makes me go :3 I want my future children to have an English accent too!)

So I took my shovel and beheaded the snake, or at least I tried. The cut wasn’t very clean as a small part of the right side was still connected. It took about a minute for the snake to stop moving and I’d like to think it died painlessly but chances are it was a painful one. Once I was sure it was dead, I dumped the snake into the horse manure cart.

Tuesday 9-1

My route to work takes me right next to our local airport. Today on my way home, I saw 2 military cargo planes in the process of landing. Since I was driving, I had to focus all my attention on driving but I took some glances every now and then. It’s been a long time since I had the chance to sit and watch airplanes take off and land back in the Philippines. Thanks to 9/11 doing so might get you in trouble with Homeland security as it did with Rintaun before I left HoL.

Wednesday 9-2

SWEEET!!!! The second half of my amazon shipment has arrived. I expected the box for my camera to be slightly bigger but to my surprise it was less than 8 inches wide. Just looking at it now make me want to go out and start taking pics. Unfortunately, I’m also tired for work today so I’ll just play with it this weekend.

Thursday 9-3

This is yet another good day for me. Work was light, got paid, and I got to spray 2 beehives (or were they paper wasp hives?). I was in the middle of trimming some bushes when I was harassed by several buzzing insects. When one of them landed on me I realized that they were bees and I must have been working too close to their hive. Fortunately it was early morning and they weren’t very active and I didn’t get stung. I couldn’t see the hive from where I was so decided to get the fuck out of there and work from the other side of the bush row. Close to 2 hours later, I finally found the hive and to my surprise it was freaking huge. It took me 3 spray cans to saturate the hive and even then I’m not completely sure if I got it all because of the thick bush that was blocking the rear. I plan to take pics when I remove it on Tuesday. Hopefully all the bees (or wasps) are dead by then.

The second nest was also discovered by accident but I think this one was abandoned a long time ago since it was small and nothing was flying in or out. I didn’t want to take any chances so I spray the hell out of it.

Friday 9-4

Since I have today off, I decided to mess around with my camera. I’ll be posting some results in the next post.

  1. I understand Snake Phobia…but not like my Bee phobia. Bees are small, fast, and can fly. Snakes are much easier to avoid.

PETA would like a word with you.

And good job on the bee-slaying. What’s a paper wasp?

  2. It was either me or the snake. Quite frankly I’d like to keep living as long as possible.

    {10:01 pm} [RPG] whats a paper wasp?
