Wisedog at work
I’ve had these pics since 2 Fridays ago and I’ve been meaning to post this if it were not for my busy schedule laziness.
My boss had gone off to a competition and I happened to have my camera with me that day so I took a few pics of my work place.
I usually start of my mornings shoveling horse shit out of the stalls, the pic above left shows a typical load. It gets worse when it rains and the horses have been in their stalls all day. The manure cart in the pic above right is where I dump the manure before it’s taken to another farm where it’s used for fertilizer.
On the left is Alfalfa mixed hay (reminds me a lot of Italian spices on spaghetti), straw hay in the center, and wood shavings on the right which is used as bedding for the horses. First time I dealt with the bag of wood shavings, I thought there wouldn’t be much in there but I was proven wrong after opening it. Also, that shit is surprisingly heavy.
There are 5 stalls in this stable. The ones with the electric fans have the thoroughbreds (race horses) in them. They usually only go out to graze in the fields in the mornings and evenings. The other 3 horses stay out in the field pretty much at all times except when it’s time to feed them.
On a side note, my boss told me that one of the horses used to be the top in the nation in show jumping from 2001-2003.
These are the 3 horses that stay in the field most of the time. They have a tendency to trash their stall (shit all over the place including on the walls) so my boss decided to keep the out to save on bedding cost as well as work load on clean up (thank goodness!).
There are 6 fields (or paddocks as they are known in this business) with 2 of the used by the three horses and the thoroughbreds each get their own. The remaining two are currently not in use. I only have to mow the thoroughbreds’ paddocks on a regular basis and the empty ones when the grass gets very thick. My boss takes care of the other two with a diesel tractor.
As much as I complain on IRC about not wanting to go to work, work is actually fun (well not counting the manure shoveling). I just don’t enjoy waking up every single morning with sore muscles.
