Goodbye old friend

Old Faithful D5000

My Nikon D5000 has served me well for the past 5 years. It was the first major purchase I made when I was working at the horse farm. I have taken it with me to Otakon (pics fucking when?) and it helped me survive my photography class. It has been a great (inanimate) companion to me but it is time to move on.

It’s not dead, my Dad gave me his D5100 and I passed my D5000 to my Mom.

Why? Because my Dad got a D5500. The camera was only announced 6 months ago and he now has one. Yes I am so jelly.

My Dad brought up the idea of getting a new camera and swapping around the old ones last week. Initially I was hesitant to go through with it since I love my D5000 but I decided to go through with it since I get a free upgrade and my Mom gets my old camera.

My new camera: Nikon D5100 with a kit lense.

Two out of threeIn terms of handling and weight, there’s not a whole lot of difference between the 5000 and 5100. In fact the only noticeable physical change beyond the swivel screen is the button layout. Both the 5100 and 5500 have bigger and better screens (3″ for the 5100, 3.2″ for the 5500, 2.7″ for the 5000) and both swivel from the side rather than the bottom like the 5000. Internally I did not notice any difference even though I know it has a newer processor and can handle 1080p videos versus 720p only on the 5000.

I got the chance to play around with my Dad’s D5500 and it just felt much better than the D5000. The UI for the 5500 is much large and feels a bit more user friendly while the UI for the 5100 is pretty much the same as the 5000. I wish I took a pic of the UI to show comparison.

I hope I find some time to go on a photoshoot with the 5100 before my summer break ends.
